The Catholic University in Ružomberok is a public university with a confessional character, which owes its establishment to the Conference of Bishops of Slovakia and the National Council of the Slovak Republic.

It carries out its activities mainly in the field of historical, humanities, pedagogical, natural, social and medical sciences, but also in the field of arts, economics, management and law.

The basic mission of the University is to strive for the truth and to spread it further because of the very essence of the Truth. According to Ex corde Ecclesiae: "It is the honor and responsibility of a Catholic university to devote itself unreservedly to the cause of truth. This is her own way of serving the dignity of man and at the same time the mission of the Church. (...) The Catholic university is much more characterized by a free search for the whole truth about the world, about man and about God." (Art. 4) For the sake of the search for truth, the University is committed to promoting knowledge through its research and publications. This responsibility unites staff and students in all areas of university life, especially in professional educational and research activities.

The exchange of knowledge, so essential to the university, requires the presence of academics and students from diverse spheres, because it is through them that it develops. The Catholic identity of the university is deepened by the active presence of Catholic intellectuals, of whom there should be a majority in the university. The University's leadership has been careful to preserve this ideal throughout the history of the institution. What the University asks of all members of the academic community is respect for the goals of the University and a willingness to participate in the dialogue that shapes and fulfils it. At the same time, the University insists on academic freedom, which is a guarantee for open dialogue and creative scientific research.
