Faculty profile

Jessenius Faculty of Medicine is one of the three medical faculties of public universities in the Slovak Republic. It was established in 1969 as an independent faculty and is an integral part of Comenius University. The faculty provides higher education at bachelor, master, doctoral and lifelong studies.

Studies can be completed in the study programmes General Medicine (in Slovak and English), Dentistry and in non-medical study programmes. Bachelor's degree programmes include Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health. At the master's level, Midwifery and Public Health programmes are offered.

Graduates of the General Medicine programme are awarded the title Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) on graduation, graduates of the Dentistry programme the title Doctor of Dentistry (M.D.), and graduates of non-medical study programmes the title Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Master of Science (M.Sc.). The faculty also provides postgraduate doctoral studies in accredited disciplines, after which graduates receive the degree of PhD.. The educational activities of the faculty became comprehensive after obtaining accreditation for specialization studies in the health department. The faculty has also accredited courses for habilitation and inauguration.

Since the academic year 2000/2001, the study programmes of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine have been implemented through the credit system according to the EU criteria. This system allows students greater flexibility in their studies and the opportunity to enrol in a number of universities in Slovakia and abroad.

Jessenius Faculty of Medicine is one of the leading faculties not only within Comenius University, but also among the prestigious institutions providing medical education at the international level. It has top-notch departments not only in basic and preclinical disciplines, but also in clinical teaching facilities of the University Hospital Martin. The faculty has long achieved excellent results in scientific research and international activities.
