The Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Prešov is an institution whose main task is to educate students in accredited non-medical study programmes at the level of contemporary knowledge, scientific and research results.

General characteristics of the graduate's professional profile(1st degree)
The graduate of studies in the field of emergency health care of the study programme paramedic will acquire knowledge of medical sciences, humanities subjects and specific subjects of emergency health care, on which the activities of a paramedic are based, in particular emergency medicine and intensive care, medical and crisis management, related medical disciplines, applied sciences such as professional communication, ethics, law and legislation.
The graduate of the first degree of higher education in the bachelor study programme in the field of study of emergency health care acquires professional competence for the performance of professional work activities of a paramedic within the meaning of the Decree of the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic No. 334/2010 Coll. on the scope of practice of a paramedic in the emergency medical service. A paramedic who has acquired professional competence to perform professional work activities shall perform, independently or in cooperation with a doctor, professional work activities in emergency medical care resulting from generally binding legislation and corresponding to the scope and content of the acquired education of the minimum standard of education pursuant to Slovak Government Regulation No 296/2010 Coll. on professional competence for the exercise of the health profession, the method of further education of health professionals, the system of specialisation fields and the system of certified work activities, as amended, and the recommended study plan.
Saving human life in various situations and environments is an activity that requires people who are physically and mentally prepared at a high professional level. The profile of a graduate is characterised by the unity of moral, professional-theoretical and professional-practical competence.
The graduate of the study programme "Paramedic" is able to think independently and react promptly, purposefully, quickly, prudently and decisively in situations related to saving life and health. He/she is able to make changes, take risks, take responsibility, improvise. Knows current legislation related to the provision of health care. Can competently provide expert pre-medical first aid, including selected special procedures, in crisis and life-threatening situations. Is competent to communicate in rescue activities at a professional medical level.

Graduate of the Emergency Health Care Medical Paramedic study programme:
Medical Paramedic
- performs professional work activities in the provision of emergency health care within the scope of his/her competences,
- uses professional medical, paramedic and nursing terminology,
- understands the essential facts, concepts, principles and theories relating in particular to emergency medicine, emergency health care, disaster medicine, integrated rescue system,
- possesses the knowledge of the related medical sciences and humanities necessary for the practice of his/her profession,
- uses interdisciplinary knowledge in the provision of expert, individualised and comprehensive care for patients with life- or health-threatening conditions,
- applies educational methods with an emphasis on health protection, accident and emergency prevention and first aid,
- adheres to generally applicable legislative regulations and ethical, occupational health and safety standards,
- participates in research in the field of emergency medical services,
- implements the latest scientific knowledge in clinical practice,
- communicates and collaborates effectively in both horizontal and vertical interpersonal relationships,
- professionally resolves crisis situations,
- works with the use of modern information and communication systems and technologies,
- cooperates with other components of the integrated rescue system,
- knows the rules of road safety and mobile ambulance driving using warning signs,
- knows how to navigate in the terrain,
- applies the principles of disinfection and sterilisation, anti-epidemiological measures,
- works responsibly and creatively in a team, directs the activities of the rescue team when necessary,
- identifies changes in patient safety behaviours, observes safe medication administration, identifies all forms of violence.

- knows the distribution and forms of drugs, the action of drugs and the factors that influence them, the interrelationships of drugs, the different groups of drugs and their action on different anatomical and physiological systems, the methods and principles of the correct administration of drugs, with emphasis on their application in emergency situations
- knows the latest and expanding knowledge in selected clinical fields: internal medicine, surgery, trauma surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology and obstetrics, psychiatry, neurology with a focus on intensive and emergency medicine
- knows the theory, methods and procedures of disaster medicine
- knows the latest and expanding knowledge of psychology and ethics in emergency services
- knows the theory of management in the professional activity of the paramedic
- know and master a foreign language at a level that enables the study of foreign professional literature and basic communication with foreigners
Practical skills and competences (Level 1).

- clinical experience in a health care facility in the various departments of clinical disciplines under the professional supervision of nurses and physicians,
- practical skills in emergency medical services under the professional supervision of paramedics and in an emergency medical services operations centre.
A graduate of the bachelor's degree programme in emergency health care
is independently competent in emergency health care:
- take a basic medical history from a person in need of emergency health care, his/her relatives, and other witnesses to the event,
- observe, assess and record vital signs using appropriate clinical
and technical means, - perform an assessment of a person's health status and make an occupational diagnosis
within the scope of training received, - perform initial treatment of all injuries, including bleeding,
- perform airway clearance, ensure airway patency
and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, - use automatic and semi-automatic external defibrillators,
- provide peripheral venous access, including intraosseous, and administer saline
to maintain patency of venous access, - administer oxygen therapy by inhalation,
- conduct preterm labor, perform the first treatment of the newborn, nurse the parturient,
- treat pneumothorax in a non-invasive way,
- introduce gastric probes,
- introduce a urinary catheter in women,
- sample biological material when necessary,
- sample capillary blood for diagnostic purposes,
- position and immobilize the person, taking into account the extent and nature of the injury or illness, and extricate within the limits of their capabilities,
- immobilise injured parts of a person's body,
- warm or cool a person in the event of injuries caused by low or high temperatures,
- treat an amputee suitable for reimplantation,
- provide transport of the person,
- continuously monitor and ensure that the person's needs related to health, illness and dying are met,
- treat drains, peripheral vascular catheters, indwelling urinary catheters, probes, cannulas
and stomas, - ensure the safety of intervention,
- ensure landing pad safety and navigation of the helicopter ambulance in the field,
- provide care for the body of a dead person.
Upon written authorization from the professional representative of the appropriate emergency medical service provider and after consultation of the procedure with the physician of the appropriate emergency medical service provider, is qualified to independently administer:
- and other crystalloid solutions, not just saline,
- 40% glucose solution intravenously in diagnosed hypoglycemia,
- adrenaline intravenously, intraosseously, or endotracheally in circulatory arrest.
- nitrates orally,
- acetylsalicylic acid orally,
- clopidogrel orally,
- non-opioid analgesics orally, intramuscularly or fractionated intravenously,
- adrenaline for anaphylactic shock.
- treatment in cardiopulmonary resuscitation,
- analgesics,
- furosemide,
- diazepam,
- magnesium sulphuricum,
- methylprednisolone,
- antidotes,
- antiemetics,
- antihistamines
- heparins,
- for interclinical transport of a person, treatment as prescribed by the physician who indicated the transport.
In addition to the above, independently performed professional work activities, he/she is qualified to collaborate with a physician in:
- cardiopulmonary resuscitation, intubation and controlled breathing, defibrillation and administration of drugs,
- administration of all types of medication in the prescribed manner,
- preterm labour, treatment of the parturient and the newborn after delivery,
- catheterisation of the bladder in children and men,
- small surgical procedures,
- administration of transfusion and blood derivatives,
- deployment of esophageal compression probe.
In addition to the following professional activities, a graduate of the bachelor's degree program in emergency health care is able to:
- assist in the driving of a motor vehicle of an ambulance ambulance,
- maintain radio and telephone communication with the emergency medical service emergency operations centre and all components of the integrated rescue system
and co-operate in navigating in the field, - rescue persons in emergency situations in cooperation with other components of the integrated rescue system,
- participate in the transport of a person from the scene of an incident by available ways and means.
Additional knowledge, skills and abilities of the graduate:
After graduation, the graduate is able to:
- shape and expand their professional and personal profile in the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences and languages,
- be reasonably adaptable in related fields, logical thinker, able to apply acquired knowledge, practical skills and problem-solving abilities,
- is able to work independently and in a team, coordinate the work of a team, continuously educate himself/herself, take a sustained interest in the development of his/her field by studying professional literature, master important manual skills, act purposefully, prudently and decisively in accordance with legal and ethical standards.
- use knowledge of psychology and pedagogy in the education and training of new members of the rescue team.
- be able to continue their own professional and professional development,
Definition of the graduate's areas of application:
The graduate of the 1st degree of the study programme in the study field of emergency health care will be employed as:
- a paramedic in the emergency medical service as a crew member of an ambulance, ambulance, ambulance with mobile intensive care unit equipment or helicopter ambulance,
- paramedic paramedic of an emergency medical service operations centre,
- medical worker in the military health service of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic,
- medical paramedic in an ambulance of the Fire Rescue Corps,
- medical rescuer in the ambulance of the Mountain Rescue Service,
- health paramedic in the emergency room.
Graduates of the paramedic study programme will be employed as professional paramedics:
- in individual components of the Integrated Rescue System in paramedic practice
- in pre-hospital emergency care
- in the emergency department
- in management
- in research
- in education and training
- in medical activities of the armed forces
- in the fire brigade
- in other forces active in saving health and life.
A graduate of study in the field of study in emergency health care of the study program paramedic from obtains a full first degree in emergency health care with an orientation to emergency health care.

EXTERNAL FORM STUDY
Applicants for external study will be admitted after fulfilling the prescribed conditions:
1. completion of full secondary education by matriculation examination in the field of study:
- paramedic or higher vocational education in the field of study paramedic with at least 1 year of professional experience in permanent employment in the Ambulance Service or in the basic components of the Integrated Rescue System (the applicant shall provide a matriculation certificate and a diploma),
- a qualified general nurse who performs the activity of a paramedic with at least 5 - years of professional experience in permanent employment in the Emergency Medical Service (the applicant shall provide a matriculation certificate and a diploma)
- a nurse who performs the activity of a paramedic with at least 5 -years of professional experience in permanent employment in the Emergency Medical Service (the applicant shall provide a matriculation certificate)
- nurse with at least 1 - year of professional experience in permanent employment in a health care institution, classified as an anaesthesiology nurse in the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (the applicant shall provide a school-leaving certificate)
- a candidate with a completed secondary vocational education with a matriculation examination working permanently in the basic components of the Integrated Rescue System (hereinafter referred to as the IRS) with at least 1 year of professional experience in the basic component of the IRS (the candidate shall provide a matriculation certificate)
2. employer's confirmation of employment and length of professional experience shall be attached to the application form by each applicant (according to point 1) (permanent employment in the emergency medical service, in a medical facility at the OAIM or in the basic components of the Integrated Rescue System at the time of applying for studies and throughout the study period)
3. successful completion of the physical aptitude test - 100 m swimming - (compulsory for all applicants)
Applicants from abroad (outside the Czech Republic) must pass the admission procedure, namely a written test of human biology within the scope of the gymnasium curriculum (in the Slovak language) and a exam of physical aptitude - 100 m swimming.
4. fulfilment of the criteria of medical fitness for the profession according to the Decree of the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic No.364/2009, which establishes the criteria of medical fitness for applicants for medical study fields (applicants shall submit a recommendation of a general practitioner for study in the given field of study to the application form
Motor aptitude test:
Swim 100mSwim 100m
Test Description: The candidate will complete the event in the chosen breaststroke or crawl stroke method with a jump start from the starting block. A swim cap is required for the swim. Evaluation:The test is performed only once and the performance (min:s) is evaluated.

1.2Information for applicants to the Bachelor's degree
The application form must include the following:
1/ Application(form):
paper application form (admission fee 35 EUR) applicants shall purchase the university application form designed for undergraduate studies at the form shops (e.g. ŠEVT), thoroughly fill in all its parts, attach other required documents and send it to the address of the Faculty of Health Professions of PU
or
electronic application form (admission fee 30 EUR) applicants fill in and submit the electronic application form on the website of the University Portal: https://prihlaskavs.sk/sk/ or on the website of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Slovak Republic: https://www.minedu.sk/prihlaska-na-studium-vypis-z-danoveho-priznania-a-ine-formulare/ Then it is necessary to print out the submitted electronic application form, attach to it all other required documents and send it by post to the address of the Faculty of Health Professions of the PU.
Without receipt of the printed e-application form along with other requisites, the e-application form is invalid and the candidate will not be included in the admission process!
2/ Evidence of merit:
Applicants applying for external form of study do not need to fill in or provide evidence of their high school grades. As proof of completion of secondary education, they shall submit only an officially certified matriculation certificate
with their application form.
3/ Other application documents (included in the application form):
- Proof of payment of admission fee
- recommendation of a general practitioner for studying in the given field
- structured CV
- proof of Slovak language proficiency- B1 level - to be provided by foreign applicants (except applicants from the Czech Republic) (see ch. 1.4)
- the application form must be handwritten signed by the applicant (page 3).
4/ In case the applicant wants to apply for more than one study programme at the faculty, he/she has to submit a separate application for each study programme separately and pay the application fee for each application separately.
5/ Only those candidates who submit a duly completed application form, attach all the required enclosures, pay the admission fee and meet the required criteria within the stipulated deadline ( 31 March 2025) will be invited for the entrance examination. An alternative date for the entrance examination may only be requested in writing in the event of a serious medical reason, no later than 24 hours after the date of the entrance examination (the application must be accompanied by a relevant medical report of the medical problem, not a certificate of treatment). The faculty does not grant a make-up date in the event of a failed entrance examination.
6/ Administrative fee for the admission process, will not be refunded to applicants in the following cases:
a) incomplete application (after being requested to complete the required documents )
b) if the applicant does not meet the required criteria and has applied for the course anyway
c) if the applicant applies for a study programme which the faculty does not plan to implement in the given academic year
d) if he/she does not enrol for the study
If the student/applicant makes an erroneous payment, he/she will be charged a fee for the erroneous payment in accordance with the current PU Presov price list for the academic year in which he/she applied and the remaining funds will be refunded to the sender's bank account.
7/ ALL THE REQUIREMENTS LISTED ARE REQUIRED AND AN APPLICATION WITHOUT THEM WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!
8/External form of study is charged according to Act No.131/2002 on Higher Education and its amendment No.363/2007 Coll. The amount of tuition fees is published on the faculty's website http://www.unipo.sk/fakulta-zdravotnictva.
The length of study in the study programme in the external form at the bachelor's degree is 3 years!
Conditions for international students
1.4 Information for international applicants
Study in study programmes at the 1st and 2nd level of higher education and in full-time and external form, which is carried out in the Slovak language, requires knowledge of the Slovak language at least at the B1 level. We recommend that applicants from abroad (except applicants from the Czech Republic) verify and prove their mastery of the Slovak language by a Slovak language matriculation examination, an ECL (European Consortium for the Certificate of Attaiment in Modern Languages) certificate of Slovak language proficiency at B1 level, a certificate of Slovak language proficiency at B1 level issued by a language school included in the network of schools and school facilities of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Slovak Republic (the list is available at: https://www.cvtisr.sk/buxus/docs//JH/stat_zus.pdf ). Proficiency in the Slovak language is verified in written tests for foreign applicants.
Slovak language proficiency at B1 level:
a) in the field of comprehension:
- the candidate understands the main ideas expressed in written language on common topics encountered at work, school, leisure, etc. Understands the meaning of many radio and TV programmes on current affairs or topics related to areas of personal or professional interest if they are spoken relatively slowly and clearly
- Understands texts which contain everyday vocabulary or which relate to work or study. Can understand descriptions of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters
b) in the area of communication:
- Demonstrates ability to cope with most situations that may arise when travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can engage unprepared in conversation about topics that he/she knows, is interested in or that relate to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current affairs)
- knows how to string phrases together in a simple way to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and goals. He/she can give concise reasons and explanations for his/her views and plans. Can tell a story or relate the content of a book or film and describe his/her reactions.
c)in the area of written expression:
- knows how to write simple coherent sentences on topics that he/she knows well or that
are of personal interest to him/her. He/she can write private letters describing experiences and impressions.
