Prosthetics and Orthotics

Characteristics

The graduate can continue in the II level of studies or find employment in specialized workplaces that provide care with the application of prosthetic, orthotic, calceotic devices and all compensatory aids. It is a study programme with a wide coverage of the entire Slovak Republic, since the content of the study is built in compatibility in the ISPO system, within the international level, the presented study programme may be of interest also for the nearest foreign countries.

Learning Objectives

Graduates of the BSc Prosthetics and Orthotics programme have a cross-cutting knowledge of the discipline with a focus on application at a level commensurate with the current state of knowledge, a broad knowledge and understanding of the specialised field, including an appreciation of the practical context and relationships to related disciplines. Graduates will acquire knowledge in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, medicine and the life sciences, which they apply in clinical, prosthetic and bioengineering practice. Knowledge of foreign languages and adequate knowledge of economics, law and other social areas are part of the education.

The first degree qualification in Prosthetics and Orthotics is awarded to students who:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding in their field of study, related to general or vocational secondary education
- have the ability to acquire and interpret data in their field of study
- have developed the educational skills necessary to continue to higher levels of study
- within the framework of interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation, are able to adequately assess the specific type and function of an appliance, its proper application and safe use.

Learning Outcomes

A graduate of the Prosthetics and Orthotics program demonstrates knowledge in the design, construction and application of technical orthotics devices in the areas of prosthetic, orthotic as well as calceotic systems. He/she has knowledge of human musculoskeletal diagnostics, which he/she uses and interprets in the design of devices and interdisciplinary communication with clinical practice. He also applies a broad knowledge of biomechanics in the design and construction of devices. He also has the ability to communicate with patients at a professional level, but also to interpret the relevant facts in a way that is suitable for a lay audience.
The graduate is able to search, process and retrieve the necessary information from professional publications in electronic database systems and further apply this knowledge in communication and argumentation with the professional public at a professional level. Based on this knowledge and interdisciplinary collaboration, the student makes ethically and socially responsible decisions in order to provide and ensure the best and most appropriate patient care.
The graduate of the program has knowledge of conventional procedures for taking measurements and manufacturing orthopaedic devices, but also has knowledge and skills in innovative approaches using 3D scanning and device design in a software environment.
The graduate has developed learning skills with a high degree of autonomy and is thus prepared to design comprehensive patient care procedures based on the analysis of expert information as well as to creatively approach the solution of potential problems of an interdisciplinary nature.

Conditions of admission without the entrance exam

According to §56 (1) of Act No.131/2002 Coll. on Higher Education and on Amendments and Supplements to Certain Acts, the basic condition for admission to the Bachelor's degree (first degree study programme) is the acquisition of a complete secondary education or a complete secondary vocational education. On the basis of §56 (2) of the Act, SJF TUKE determines other conditions for admission to study in individual study programmes.

No secondary school grades or doctor's certificates are required with the application form.
