University profile

THe Slovak Medical University in Bratislava (SMU) is a proud continuator of the tradition of education of health care professionals in the field of specialization studies as well as lifelong learning in Slovakia.

As early as 1.5.1953, the Slovak Institute for Doctors' Training was established in Trenčín, which by 30.6.1966 begins to create the beginnings of the education of health care professionals. After the construction of a new building in Bratislava, the Institute moved to the capital on 1 July 1966 under a new name - Institute for Further Education of Doctors and Pharmacists in Bratislava, under which it operated until 1991. It was in its middle, 1.7.1991, that it was renamed to Institute for Further Education of Health Care Workers, Bratislava. The content and form of studies responded to the needs and requirements of practice, with which the last name change came hand in hand: on 1.11.1998 the Institute was renamed to Slovak Postgraduate Academy of Medicine in Bratislava.

By the Act of the National Council of the Slovak Republic No. 401/2002 Coll. on the establishment of the Slovak Medical University , the Slovak Medical University in Bratislava was established on the 1st of September 2002 as a state university-type higher education institution.
