Medical and Diagnostic Devices

Baccalaureate studies in the study programme Medical and Diagnostic Devices (health sciences) is a professionally oriented study programme. The study programme fully respects the Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the recognition of professional qualifications within the European Union (EU).

The standard length of study is a minimum of three and a maximum of five years. The studies are completed by the award of the degree of Bachelor (B.Sc.).

The study includes compulsory professional practice of the student in a total of one semester. The teaching is focused on development of practical skills of the student. It is carried out in general or specialised inpatient health care facilities, in medical device dispensaries, public and hospital pharmacies with a portfolio of medical devices. In addition to the professional practice in medical institutions, the teaching includes other methods for skills development through laboratory exercises, project-oriented interactive seminars, internship in a non-medical workplace dealing with medical devices and/or in vitro diagnostic medical devices (government regulatory authorities, manufacturers, representative offices of foreign medical device manufacturers and suppliers, etc.).

Theoretical teaching is interdisciplinary in nature. The student gains an overview of the different types, types and classes of medical devices that are part of health care. He/she has an understanding of medical devices in terms of quality, safety vigilance and their intended use for health care delivery.

The combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, intensively supported by hands-on learning, will enable the student to develop his/her skills, assume the responsibility of becoming a competent medical device professional.

Prospects of graduates

Graduates of the bachelor's degree programme become health professionals in the field of health sciences. They can find employment in general or specialised healthcare institutions (central sterilisation departments, laboratory medicine departments), in public pharmacies with a range of medical devices, including in vitro diagnostic medical devices, in hospital pharmacies with a medical devices department. After training, they are able to ensure the control of the device, support systems, calibration of technical equipment and perform their maintenance. They are responsible for operational readiness, safe handling of medical devices, cost-effective operation and appropriate procurement of necessary medical device equipment in medical facilities. Graduates of the Bachelor's degree are professionally prepared for performance in clinical practice, e.g. for ensuring the prevention of infection with medical devices, participating in the certification and production of medical devices. Other possibilities of employment are regulatory institutions of the Ministry of Health, e.g. at the Medical Devices Department of the State Institute for Drug Control, at the Health Care Supervision Authority and at other public offices and institutions. Graduates can also work in the pharmaceutical industry with a portfolio of medical devices and in vitro diagnostic medical devices, in medical device manufacturers, including medical devices and systems, in distribution companies, as well as in research and education.
