Law
The Faculty of Law of the MBU provides higher education in accredited study programmes, in the Full-Time and the Part-Time form:
- Master's Degree - takes two years in the full-time and two years in the part-time study. The study is completed with a state examination, which also includes a defence of the final thesis. Successful graduates are awarded the academic title "Master" (abbreviated as "Mgr.").
Tuition fees for 2025/2026 academic year will be paid according to the Regulation, which will be approved for that academic year.
Prospects of graduates
Graduates of Master's Degree Study (Mgr.)
The master's study programme in law is identical in content to the areas and scope of knowledge, skills and competences required for a graduate of the study programme according to the National Qualification Framework SKK-7. The requirement for completing this study programme is the previous successful completion of a bachelor's degree in the law study programme, which in combination is an elementary prerequisite for the future performance of the indicated professions in the judicial sphere, as well as practically all so-called independent legal professions (lawyer, notary, bailiff, etc.), but also professions in other fields (e.g. corporate lawyer). Graduates have extensive theoretical-legal, legal-philosophical and historical-legal knowledge, acquired in the first level of studies in the law study programme, fundamentally expanded by knowledge of positive legal subjects (civil law, criminal law, commercial law, labour law) and the ability to apply the law in practice, also through clinically conceived subjects, such as clinic of civil law i and ii, clinic of commercial law, tax law in theory and practice, clinic of media law, clinic of personal data protection, legal clinic for communities, law of commercial companies, bankruptcy law, etc. They can connect interdisciplinary contexts and take an active role in the creation of legal regulations. The graduates are able to perceive and use interdisciplinary contexts and overlaps of legal institutes and can use them in applied legal practice. The graduates have developed orientation skills in the national legal order, in the legal system of the European Union and in international law. Thea are therefore capable of comprehensively solving legal problems in both their national and transnational contexts with the necessary consideration of European Union law and international law. In individual legal areas, they solve problems of a substantive and procedural nature and proposes their effective solution, including using the ability to work with the results of the decision-making activities of national, community and foreign courts. The graduates independently solve the ethical dilemmas that they will encounter in the performance of their profession. They can independently expand and deepen the acquired knowledge, methodically analyse programme and procedural problems of legal practice and master procedures and skills in providing legal advice. When performing their profession, they are able to reflect the position and roles of a lawyer in society. The graduates are able to think abstractly, think analytically, synthetically and contextually, formulate, propose and apply legal opinions and considerations in solving complex legal problems. The graduates are competent to independently carry out more demanding work in the field of public administration and in the private, primarily commercial sphere (such as a corporate lawyer) or work as candidates for legal professions (judiciary, prosecutor's office, advocacy, notary, enforcement of decisions, bankruptcy administration, etc.), employees in the judicial sphere (senior court official, bailiff, judge and others).

Conditions of admission
Admission requirements for the 2nd level of study
Pursuant to section 56 par. 3 of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Higher Education, as amended, the basic requirement for admission to a second-level study programme (section 53, paragraph 1 of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Higher Education, as amended) is a completion of the first-level higher education or a second-level higher education, while the sum of the number of credits obtained for the previous higher education study, which resulted in a higher education degree, and the number of credits required for the proper completion of the second-level study programme for which the applicant is applying, must be at least 300 credits.
For the purposes of the admission procedure for master's degree at the MBU Faculty of Law, a completed higher education degree according to the previous sentence means successful completion of studies in the law study programme. Officially certified copy of diploma on completion of bachelor's degree /or second-level studies pursuant to section 56 par. 3 of the Higher Education Act/ in the law study programme must be sent by 30 June 2025, but no later than the date of enrolment for studies.
Additional admission requirements for full-time and part-time master's degree:
- according to the order of the value of the weighted study mean from the bachelor's degree /or of previous studies of the second level pursuant to section 56 par. 3 of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Higher Education as amended/,
- bachelor's degree graduate /or graduate from previous studies of the second level pursuant to section 56 par. 3 of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Higher Education as amended/ from another law faculty is required to submit a statement of study results as an attachment to the application.
The number of admitted applicants will be in accordance with the approved planned number of admitted applicants for 2025/2026 academic year.
Additional information
The admission procedure for each level of study begins with the receipt of an application to the Faculty. The Faculty does not confirm receipt of the application.
In the application, it is necessary to clearly indicate which form of study the applicant is interested in, whether in the admission to full-time or part-time study. The application for study is submitted separately for the full-time form of study and separately for the part-time form of study. In one "Application for higher education studies" form, only one form of study is indicated. In case of interest in both forms of study, it is necessary to submit two applications, i.e., separately for full-time and separately for part-time form of study and pay twice the admission fee.
The MBU Faculty of Law prefers submission of electronic applications - in that case it is not necessary to send the application in paper form.
Only if the applicant does not have the possibility to submit an electronic application, they can send the application in paper form to the address: Právnická fakulta UMB, Komenského 20, 974 01 Banská Bystrica (MBU Faculty of Law, Komenského 20, 974 01 Banská Bystrica) within the application deadline for the relevant degree –form of study.
If the application is submitted in paper form, the 3rd page of the application form must have the applicant's handwritten signature.
Certified copies of all documents required for the electronic version are attached to the paper application. If the application is submitted in paper form, it is necessary to stick a copy of the proof of payment of the admission fee to the 3rd page of the application (account statement, internet banking statement. The payment order is not a proof of payment, therefore it will not be accepted!).
The MBU Faculty of Law does not require a medical certificate of medical fitness for higher education studies; we accept an application without a medical certificate.
The application for master's degree studies (2nd level) also includes a structured curriculum vitae (with the applicant's signature), an officially certified copy of the diploma on the completion of bachelor's degree studies in the field of law, or officially certified copy of the diploma on the completion of second level studies /pursuant to section 56 par. 3 of the Higher Education Act/ in the study field of law. Graduates of 1st level studies (or 2nd level studies pursuant to section 56 par. 3 of the Higher Education Act) from another law faculty are obliged to submit as an attachment to the application a certified copy of the diploma of completed previous studies in the field of law and a statement of study results for this previous study. The above does not apply to graduates of the 1st level of study (or even the 2nd level of study pursuant to section 56 par. 3 of the Higher Education Act) in the study field of law from the Faculty of Law of the MBU in Banská Bystrica. If applicants submit electronic applications, they must submit the documents that make up the application annex to the Study Office of the MBU Faculty of Law no later than on the day of enrolment, otherwise they will not be enrolled for studies. In the event that applicants have completed the 1st level of studies (or also the 2nd level of studies pursuant to section 56 par. 3 of the Higher Education Act) in the relevant academic year, they shall submit a certified copy of the diploma on completion of this study in the study field of law together with a statement of the results of the relevant study to the Study Office of the MBU Faculty of Law no later than on the day of enrolment, otherwise they will not be enrolled for the study.
Conditions for international students
Application deadline and the requirements for foreign students´ admission are identical with the ones applicable to the students from the Slovak Republic. Tuition fees are regulated by the Regulation on Tuition for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Study applicants who completed the previous level of education abroad are required to submit the proof of recognition of formal qualification document obtained outside the territory of the Slovak Republic under the Act no. 422/2015 Coll. on the Recognition of Documents of Education and on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications, as amended. The accepted applicant must submit the decision on recognition of formal qualification documents not later than on the day of enrolment for studies.
In all study programmes of the MBU Faculty of Law, applicants who have not passed the secondary school graduation exam in the Slovak language and are applying for a study programme conducted in the Slovak language must be fluent in the Slovak language at least at the B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The Faculty of Law exclusively accepts a certificate of command of the Slovak language as a foreign/second language at the required level (minimum B2), which is issued by language schools registered by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Slovak Republic in the Network of Schools and School Facilities of the Slovak Republic (registered state language schools and private language schools). Applicants must submit an officially certified copy of a document confirming knowledge of the Slovak language at the required level no later than on the day of enrolment for studies.

The payment of the fee for the admission procedure must be made by the applicant or a person authorized by them by bank transfer no later than the last day when it is possible to send the application for study. Application for study without paying the fee in the specified amount for the admission procedure will not be accepted.
The fee paid for the admission procedure is not refundable.
For reasons of automated processing of fees in the information system, we only accept non-cash payments. Payment by postal order is not accepted due to the impossibility of identifying the payer in the University's information system.

The payment of the fee for the admission procedure must be made by the applicant or a person authorized by them by bank transfer no later than the last day when it is possible to send the application for study. Application for study without paying the fee in the specified amount for the admission procedure will not be accepted.
The fee paid for the admission procedure is not refundable.
For reasons of automated processing of fees in the information system, we only accept non-cash payments. Payment by postal order is not accepted due to the impossibility of identifying the payer in the University's information system.
