Teaching the subjects of English language and literature

Learning objectives of the study programme 

1. To acquire language skills (receptive, productive,interactive) and communication language competencies (grammatical, pragmatic and socio-linguistic) in English at level B2 - C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages as the basis for further education of the future teacher in the master's degree. 

2. To acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills from the basic disciplines of English linguistics (phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicology) as a basis for further linguistic education at the master's level. 

3.Aspart of the study of the history and literature of Anglophone countries, to acquire knowledge about their cultural and social life in the past and present. To acquire the basic terminology in the field of literary theory and to acquire skills needed in the analysis and interpretation of literary texts. To get to know literary works by English-speaking authors, to be able to evaluate them, to interpret them in a broaderhistorical,socio-cultural and interculturalcontextin communication about literature (in the school environment) and in correlation with other types of art. 

4.As a preparation for education at the second level of university study, within the undergraduate level to acquire basic professional knowledge of teaching English and literature in primary and secondary schools, in conjunction with both the reflection of personal experience in teaching English and in close connectionwith pedagogical-psychological, social-scientific, pedagogical-didactic and professional-didactic basis of teaching and in correlation with initial pedagogical practice. 

5. To be able to critically evaluate information, to analyse and evaluate primary and secondary texts. To gain experience and skills in writing professional texts based on scientific research, in compliance with the procedural, structural and ethical rules of academic writing. 

 

Learning outcomes of the study programme  

Knowledge 

K1 the student has knowledge of the structure of the English language, s/he has a basic overview of communication, language reception and interaction 

K2 s/he is familiar with linguistic disciplines, s/he knows the language levels of the English language system and communication contexts 

K3 s/he has a basic overview of the history of English-speaking countries, the theory of literature and the interpretation of literary texts, s/he is familiar with the cultural and social conditions of English-speaking countries 

K4 s/heknows the propaedeutic of English language didactics in the context of a broader knowledge of the teacher training foundations and in relation to the reflection of school practice; s/he is acquainted with modern information and communication technologies usable in teaching English language and literature 

K5 s/he has theoretical knowledge relevant for working with professional literature in the creation of academic texts, s/he is familiar with various citation styles 

 

Skills 

S1 the student is able to communicate fluently, grammatically and pragmatically correctly in English, s/he has mastered learning techniques 

S2 s/he has developed linguistic skills necessary for the analysis of an English text at a given level (for instance, phonetic-phonological,morpho-syntactic, lexical) 

S3 s/he has intercultural skills as a prerequisite for critical unbiased reflection on different cultures, their history and products in the context of different literary epochs and trends 

S4 s/heis familiar with the teaching process andis able toanalyse it appropriately; s/he can reflect on selected aspects of English language teachingon the basis ofbroader teacher training foundations, including completed introductory teachingpractice 

S5 s/he can create an original scholarly text, working with scholarly literature, using scientific research methods andproceduresand respecting the procedural and ethical rules of academicwriting

Prospects of graduates

Graduate profile 

The graduate of the bachelor's study programme inTeaching of English Language and Literature in Combinationwill obtain a complete first level university degree in thestudyfieldTeacher Training and Education Science.The graduate of the study programmehas basic scientific knowledge in the field of linguistics, literarytheoryand culture of English-speaking countries.S/he speaks English at the levelC1 of theCommon European Framework of Reference for Languages.S/he has basic knowledge of English language levels, language styles, contrastive grammar, socio-pragmaticcontextsand communication contexts of the English language. S/he draws on the knowledge from the theory of literature and from the history of literature and from the interpretation of literary texts. The graduate is acquainted with the most important cultural and social realities and history of English-speaking countries. The graduate masters the basic theoretical context of didactics of English language teaching. As a graduate of teacher training programme, s/he understands the socialization and educational process in a broader social science context. S/he knows the principles of creating and designing the pedagogical environment for the relevant age categories, as well as current school legislation. S/heis able tomethodically process specific pedagogical programmes and implement specific programmes for individual parts of the content of education. The graduateacquiredknowledge and skills in the field of social science and pedagogical-psychological basis. A graduate of a bachelor's degree in teacher trainingis able towork as a teacher's assistant at lower and upper secondary education, furthermore, as an assistant teacher for leisure time activities and as a public administration employee for the relevant area.

Conditions of admission

English and American Studies - HISTORY (interdisciplinary study)

English LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE combined with a second subject

- obtaining a complete secondary education or a complete secondary vocational education;

- commitment to respect the Catholic spirit of the university and the faculty;

- in the case of teaching degree programmes in which one subject is taught by the KU Faculty of Education, fulfil the admission requirements for that subject (the requirements are published on pf.ku.sk);

- in the case of teaching degree programmes in which one subject is taught by the KU Faculty of Education, fulfil the admission requirements for that subject (the requirements are published on pf.ku.sk);

- successfully pass an entrance exam in the form of an oral interview, which can also be conducted online. The interview is conducted in English and verifies the applicant's level of knowledge of the cultural and social history and realities of English-speaking countries. The interview also identifies personal and motivational prerequisites for study. The maximum number of points is 10. The minimum score for passing the entrance examination is 6 (out of 10).

The results of the entrance examination are taken into account in the final ranking of applicants.



Additional information

The KU Faculty of Arts also offers the possibility of inter-faculty teaching combinations, i.e. the candidate can choose one subject from the offer of the KU Faculty of Arts and one subject from the offer of the KU Faculty of Education (accredited study programmes of the Faculty of Arts can be found at http://pf.ku.sk). Applicants for interfaculty programmes must meet the admission requirements from both teaching subject specialisations.

For the music education, art education, and physical education teacher education programs, successful completion of a talent exam is required.

Handicapped applicants may request that the form and manner of the entrance examination be determined taking into account their handicap (written request is sent with the application form).

General information on the admission exam

A candidate can submit:

Attention! If the applicant submits the application via portalvs.sk, the application must also be sent in paper form to the address of the faculty. In this case, the fee for the material support of the admission procedure is 35 €.

The application form must be accompanied by:
a) confirmation of payment of the fee;
b) in the case of applicants for the study programme TEACHER OF SLOVAK LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE in combination with a second teaching subject, who have obtained secondary education outside the Slovak Republic and have not at the same time completed university studies of at least the first (bachelor's) degree in the study programme Teacher of Slovak Language and Literature, also a certificate proving the level of proficiency in the Slovak language at the level of at least B2 in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and Literature;
c) in the case of applicants for the study programme JURNALISM, the applicant may also attach two examples of the author's work (these may be either the results of journalistic work (a newspaper article, a radio piece, a television piece, etc.), or the results of the journalistic work (a newspaper article, a radio piece, a television piece, etc.) published in school, local or other media (can also be online media), or any kind of text (e.g. essays, blogs) except poetry.

The study department must receive (preferably at the time of application, if possible):
a) a certified copy of the matriculation certificate;
b) in the case of applicants who received their secondary education abroad, a decision on the recognition of the foreign secondary school diploma for the purpose of studying in the Slovak Republic.
Information on the further process in the admission procedure will be sent to applicants by electronic or paper mail.

Deadline for verification of fulfillment of admission requirements: by April 15, 2025

Written decision on the result of the admission procedure will be sent to applicants no later than 30 days after the verification of the fulfilment of the conditions of admission to the study. The written decision shall be delivered to the applicants in their own hands.
