Teacher training in English language and literature (in combination)

This study program must be combined with one of the following study programs:

  • Faculty of Arts - teacher training in history (in combination)
  • Faculty of Arts - teacher training in aesthetics (in combination)
  • Faculty of Arts - teacher training in music education (in combination)
  • Faculty of Arts - teacher training in German language and literature (in combination)
  • Faculty of Arts - teacher training in Slovak language (in combination)
  • Faculty of Arts - teacher training in civics (in combination)
  • Faculty of Arts - teacher training in art education (in combination)
Prospects of graduates

A graduate of the second cycle of university studies in the field of teaching of academic subjects with an orientation to English language and literature is qualified to be a teacher of English language and literature at the lower and secondary education level. He/she is familiar with the in-depth content of the disciplines of his/her specialisation, the principles of its structure, the methodology of content production in the field and its broader cultural and social contexts. He/she is able to handle this content as a product of human (scientific) activity and, in this context, is able to project it for didactic intentions and purposes. In addition to mastering teaching competence (designing, implementing and reflecting on classroom teaching), he is able to participate in the development of methodological materials for teaching. The graduate has extensive linguistic, speech and intercultural competence. He/she is able to communicate adequately in oral and written form in all linguistic styles. His/her linguistic competence is at the level of a native speaker (C1-C2 SERR). He/she is proficient in the conceptual apparatus of linguistics, literary science and didactics of foreign language teaching. He is able to effectively didacticise theoretical knowledge. Has a deep knowledge of linguistics and literary science, which he/she is able to apply in practice. He/she is proficient in the basics of bilingual speech mediation (translation/interpretation). His didactic knowledge and skills are advanced, with a focus on grades 1-12, as he has also taken courses aimed at teaching younger pupils. The graduate will preferably be employed as a teacher of 1st and 2nd grade in primary and secondary schools.

The graduate is able to independently design and implement the teaching of relevant subjects at the lower and upper secondary level, is able to adapt educational programs to the specific conditions of pupils, school class and school type, is able to effectively support the development of information literacy of pupils, is able to analyze and assess alternative programs of secondary education, is able to effectively communicate pedagogical and disciplinary knowledge with the wider environment of the lay and professional community.

In line with the introduction of compulsory foreign language teaching in primary education, the graduate is able to work with a group of 6-18 year olds. The in-depth knowledge and ability to work also with pupils in primary education will enable the graduate to work fully as an English language teacher in a primary school.

The graduate is furthermore able to critically analyse methodological concepts and teaching materials, apply extensive linguistic literary and cultural studies knowledge in practice, consciously reflect on his/her own culture and self-reflect on other cultures.

In addition, he/she has the basics of information technology, is prepared to create methodological texts and teaching aids. He/she is able to identify opportunities for his/her own continuous professional growth and learning, to develop flexibility and speed of expression, to improve his/her linguistic and speech culture.

Conditions of admission

1)

The basic condition for admission to study according to master's study programmes (second degree of higher education within the meaning of Section 53 of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on higher education) is the completion of the first degree study programme.

2)

A candidate may be admitted to a master's study programme without an entrance examination if the master's study programme is a continuation of a bachelor's study programme in the given field of study and the candidate has passed the state examination in subjects equivalent to the subjects of the state examination of the corresponding bachelor's study programme at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Prešov.



Additional information

a) A candidate may submit multiple applications for studies at the Faculty of Arts PU, indicating one study programme on one application form;

b) Applicants shall pay the fee by bank transfer or postal money order U, the proof of payment shall be pasted on the 3rd page of the application form;

c) Applications without proof of fee payment will not be accepted;

d) Basic data required to make a cross-border transfer from abroad via SWIFT network: swift address of the bank: SPSRSKBA, account number of the payee or account number of the SP client in the format SK87 8180 0000 0070 0007 8205; name of the bank: State Treasury, ul. Radlinského 32, 010 05 Bratislava 15; unabbreviated name and address of the payee, the client of the SP. 17. novembra 1, 080 78 Prešov, purpose of payment: fee VS 10100041;

e) Candidates studying at the Faculty of Arts PU or graduates of bachelor studies at the Faculty of Arts PU do not fill in the statement of results of bachelor studies in individual semesters and do not submit a confirmation of the correctness of the data. A structured curriculum vitae shall be attached to the application form;

f) Applicants who have not completed their bachelor studies at the PU Faculty of Physical Education shall fill in the first and second pages of the application form thoroughly;

g) Applicants who have not completed their bachelor's studies at the PU Faculty of Physical Education shall submit a structured curriculum vitae and certified photocopies of documents certifying completion of studies (university diploma, state examination certificate, diploma supplement) with their application form. Officially uncertified photocopies will not be accepted;

h) Applicants who are completing their bachelor studies at a faculty other than the PU Faculty of Arts in 2025 shall attach to the application form a statement of the results of bachelor studies in individual semesters issued by the study department of the university (stamp and signature of the study department of the school/faculty);

i) Applicants for studies with specific needs: 1. Before applying for studies, they shall contact the faculty (or, in the case of university departments, the university) coordinator in order to be advised on the choice of the field of study and the scope of support services at PU; 2. provide the faculty (or, in the case of university departments, the university) coordinator with sufficient information about their limitations and needs, 3. contact the faculty coordinator well in advance (usually 1 month before the entrance examination) to ensure adequate conditions for the entrance examination. j) Candidates shall submit a medical certificate of medical fitness as part of the application form, which is available on the faculty's website;

k) The application for studies may also be submitted by an applicant who has not yet passed the Bachelor's State Examination for the type of study and cannot provide relevant data on the passing of the examination in the application form. Such an applicant shall submit proof of having passed this examination subsequently, at the latest by the deadline set by the faculty. If the applicant fails to submit this document, he/she may not be admitted to the study;

l) In the event that fewer candidates apply for a study programme than the minimum number set for that study programme, the dean may decide not to open the programme for a given academic year. The dean shall notify the applicants of this fact and invite them to change their study programme. If the applicant does not accept the offer, the faculty will refund the full admission fee;

m) The Faculty of Arts follows the internal regulation Principles of the Admission Procedure of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Prešov, which was issued by the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Arts in Prešov on 16 September 2009.

  • teaching philosophy in combination: history of philosophy, systematic philosophy;
  • Teaching of German language and literature combined: German language, German literature;
  • Teaching of Russian language and literature combined: Russian language and didactics of Russian language teaching, Russian literature;
  • Teaching of Slovak language and literature in combination: Slovak language, Slovak literature;
  • teaching of Ukrainian language and literature combined: Ukrainian language, Ukrainian literature;
  • teaching of education for citizenship in combination: history of philosophy, general economic theory, sociology, basics of the theory of state and law, constitutional law.
