Theory and Design of Structural Engineering

The graduate is proficient in scientific methods of theory and design of engineering structures and transportation constructions, as well as load-bearing structures of buildings, based on acquired knowledge of the current state of solutions to these issues both domestically and internationally, with an emphasis on their actual material properties and elastoplastic behavior, environmental aspects, and economic efficiency. They have the ability to clearly formulate a scientific problem, the subject and objectives of research and development in the field of engineering structures, transportation constructions, and building structures, and to address the formulated problem while being aware of the social, ethical, legal, and economic contexts of scientific work. Their knowledge also includes experimental research methods; they are capable of preparing and conducting scientific experiments both in the laboratory and in situ, and they understand the methods for evaluating the obtained experimental results. The graduate is able to clearly articulate the contributions of research outputs to the development of the scientific field, academic discipline, and construction practice.

Prospects of graduates

The graduate of the study program will find employment both domestically and in the European labor market as a leading member of a creative research team, or as an independent researcher at universities, colleges, academic institutions, research and development facilities, and companies focused on the analysis, design, and construction of complex engineering structures, transportation constructions, and load-bearing structures of various types and purposes.

Conditions of admission

The basic requirement for admission to doctoral studies is the completion of a Master's degree program or a program according to § 53 para. 3 of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Higher Education and on Amendments and Supplements to Certain Acts, as amended. Another requirement is a sufficient knowledge of one foreign language (at the candidate's choice) and successful completion of the admission procedure. For graduates from other fields, the structure of completed subjects in the study program and their professional and research activities that ensure their ability to continue in doctoral studies will be evaluated.

Additional information

The admission exam consists of a language component and a subject component.

The language component of the exam is conducted in the form of a test. Its purpose is to assess the knowledge of a foreign language.

The subject component of the exam is conducted in the form of a professional presentation (10-12 slides) dedicated to the topic of the dissertation that the candidate is applying for. The candidate may consult the content of the presentation with their thesis advisor. The academic quality of the presentation is evaluated by a committee for the admission process in the respective study program.
