Materials science

The PhD programme in Materials Science provides an in-depth knowledge of the chemical concept and physics of different types of materials, their detailed structural structure, the physical basis of mechanical and functional properties and degradation of materials. It gives the skills to tackle projects of production and processing of materials, their research and development in order to generate and develop new knowledge in the field of engineering. Provides methodological knowledge and skills for the selection and implementation of appropriate scientific methods to address the theses of one's own dissertation and other topics in basic and applied materials research. The study programme teaches to follow the latest trends in science and research and to apply them for solving assigned scientific and technical tasks and formulating new hypotheses and strategies for further research in the field of materials. It provides knowledge in the field of measurement, data collection and processing using modern information tools and analytical techniques. Gives the skills and competences to present the results of research and development at conferences and in scientific journals. Provides basic theoretical and practical teaching experience for professional education.

Prospects of graduates

Absolvent understands the relationships between the physicochemical nature of the structure and properties of different materials and is able to manage their changes through the application of technologies and processes for the production and processing of materials. He/she is able to predict the service life of materials based on knowledge of the physicochemical and mechanical degradation processes of materials. Applies modern structural and phase analysis of materials, analysis of their properties and degradation in materials development and research. Actively acquires, critically evaluates and analyses new knowledge and information, applies it in solving projects of materials production, their research and development. Within the framework of research and development, independently formulates new hypotheses and strategies, carries out own scientific and professional activities, assesses and modifies them, interprets their results with regard to the long-term impact in the field, social, scientific and ethical aspects. Can design, implement and improve research, development and innovation procedures in the field of materials and their processing. Can demonstrate the contribution of own original research to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the field through the formulation and publication of research and development results at international level. Independently manages the tasks of research and development of materials, leads and coordinates their research teams. He/she is also able to communicate the acquired knowledge in an appropriate way within the educational process in professional subjects in the field of materials.
