Material Engineering
The Materials Engineering programme of study includes deeper knowledge and understanding of the specialised area of the Mechanical Engineering field of study, which covers the nature of various types of metallic, non-metallic materials and composites. It is an understanding of the fundamental theories of the relationship between the chemical composition, structure and properties of materials, their limit states and degradation processes. It provides an explanation of the detailed nature of the main metallurgical and engineering materials processing technologies aimed at modifying the structure and properties of materials. The study programme also provides knowledge of advanced materials and technologies for their production and processing, and, depending on the focus, of special types of materials, simulations and modelling of material processes. It provides the skills to select and design materials, as well as the knowledge and skills for more sophisticated analyses of the structure and properties of materials. The programme of study gives students the disposition to find and present their own and team solutions to problems in materials engineering, materials research and development.
Prospects of graduates
The graduate knows, understands and thoroughly understands the connections and relationships between the chemical composition, structure and technically important properties of metallic and non-metallic structural materials and composites and uses them to solve problems in research, development, design, construction and production in the field of engineering and metallurgy. Understands the basic theories of physics and phase transformations of various types of materials and quantifies their impact on the control of materials processing by forming, heat and chemical-thermal treatment, welding and surface treatments. Depending on the chosen focus, it also masters the principles of production of nanomaterials, biomaterials, materials for green technologies and energy, theory, simulation and modelling of plastic deformation of materials and the principles of their forming technologies. On the basis of the acquired knowledge, he selects suitable classical and progressive material solutions and processes for the production of their semi-finished and finished products for classical and modern applications in various fields of technology. The graduate uses an engineering approach to identify for certain specific conditions the extent of mechanical and corrosion degradation of materials, their limit states and to predict the residual lifetime of material structures. The graduate is able to carry out sample preparation and own structural and phase analysis of materials by electron microscopy, diffraction and other modern analytical methodologies used in materials research and development. Can quantify various mechanical and functional properties of materials using appropriate diagnostic and analytical tests. Actively acquires new information and knowledge from available professional and scientific sources and uses it to find, design and manage large-scale engineering solutions in mechanical and materials engineering. The graduate independently and as a team solves professional tasks, problems and projects related to the selection of materials for engineering applications and the processes of their production and processing. Innovatively finds and formulates his/her own solutions to problems and work tasks in the field of mechanical engineering and presents them to the professional public.
