Learningobjectivesof the study programme
1. Toacquirelanguage skills (receptive, productive, interactive) and communication language competencies (grammatical,pragmaticand socio-linguistic) in English at level B2 - C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
2. Toacquiretheoretical knowledge and practical skills from the basic disciplines of English linguistics (phonetics and phonology, morphology,syntaxand lexicology) as a basis for further linguistic education at the master's level.
3. As part of the study of the history and literature of Anglophone countries, toacquireknowledge about their cultural and social life in the past and present. Toacquirethe basic terminology in the field of literary theory andtoacquireskills needed in the analysis and interpretation of literary texts. To get to know literary works by English-speaking authors, to be able to evaluate them, to interpret them in a broader socio-historical context.
4. To gain knowledge of basic concepts, movements, genres,authorsand the process of mediation in critical and cultural studies and to learn how cultural, political, social,technologicaland economic changes are reflected in converging forms of cultural production and critical thinking.
5. To be able to critically evaluate information, to analyse and evaluate primary and secondary texts. To gain experience and skills in writing professional texts based on scientific research, in compliance with the procedural, structural and ethical rules of academic writing.

The graduate of the bachelor's study programme in English and American Studies will obtain a complete first level university degree in the field of philology. S/he speaks English at levels B2 to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. S/he has knowledge of the English language and its laws, thewayand conditions of its functioning at all language levels. The graduateis able tospecify and draw on knowledge from the theory of literature and from the history of literature and from the interpretation of literary texts. The graduate is acquainted with the most important cultural and social realities and history of English-speaking countries. S/he knows the basic procedures, analyses and interpretations of prose, dramatic and poetic texts. S/he can be characterized by creative and flexible thinking and is able to engage in work in the arts and creative industries. S/he can present his / her own opinions in English. The graduate of the study programmeEnglish and American Studiesis able tomaintaincontact with the current development of the English language and English-speaking countries and effectively continue her/his own professional development. The graduate of the study programmeEnglish and American Studies can work, for example, as a cultural agent, cultural officer, publicadministration specialist in the field of international relations, public administration specialist in the field of culture or as a textproofreader.

English LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE combined with a second subject
- obtaining a complete secondary education or a complete secondary vocational education;
- commitment to respect the Catholic spirit of the university and the faculty;
- in the case of teaching degree programmes in which one subject is taught by the KU Faculty of Education, fulfil the admission requirements for that subject (the requirements are published on pf.ku.sk);
- in the case of teaching degree programmes in which one subject is taught by the KU Faculty of Education, fulfil the admission requirements for that subject (the requirements are published on pf.ku.sk);
- successfully pass an entrance exam in the form of an oral interview, which can also be conducted online. The interview is conducted in English and verifies the applicant's level of knowledge of the cultural and social history and realities of English-speaking countries. The interview also identifies personal and motivational prerequisites for study. The maximum number of points is 10. The minimum score for passing the entrance examination is 6 (out of 10).
The results of the entrance examination are taken into account in the final ranking of applicants.
Additional information
Health disadvantaged applicants may request that the form and method of the entrance examination be determined taking into account their disadvantage (a written request is sent together with the application form).

Attention! If the applicant submits the application via portalvs.sk, the application must also be sent in paper form to the address of the faculty. In this case, the fee for material support of the admission procedure is 35 €.
The application form must be accompanied by:
a) confirmation of payment of the fee;
b) in the case of applicants for the study programme TEACHER OF SLOVAK LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE in combination with a second teaching subject who have obtained secondary education outside the Slovak Republic and have not at the same time completed university studies of at least the first (bachelor's) degree in the study programme Teacher of Slovak Language and Literature, also a certificate proving the level of proficiency in the Slovak language at the level of at least B2 in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and Literature;
c) in the case of applicants for the study programme JURNALISM, the applicant may also attach two examples of the author's work (these may be either the results of journalistic work (a newspaper article, a radio piece, a television piece, etc.), or the results of the journalistic work (a newspaper article, a radio piece, a television piece, etc.) published in school, local or other media (can also be online media), or any kind of text (e.g. essays, blogs) except poetry.
The following documents must be delivered to the study department (preferably at the time of application, if possible):
a) a certified copy of the matriculation certificate;
b) in the case of applicants who received their secondary education abroad, a decision on the recognition of the foreign secondary school diploma for the purpose of studying in the Slovak Republic.
Information on the further process in the admission procedure will be sent to applicants by electronic or paper mail.
Deadline for verification of fulfillment of the admission requirements: by April 15, 2025
Written decision on the result of the admission procedure will be sent to applicants no later than 30 days after the verification of the fulfilment of the conditions of admission to the study. The written decision shall be delivered to the applicants in their own hands.
