Commercial Law and Financial Law
The Faculty of Law of the MBU provides higher education in accredited study programmes, in the Full-Time and the Part-Time form:
- Doctoral Degree - takes three years in the full-time and four years in the part-time study. The study is completed with a defence of the dissertation, which is, after completion of appropriate requirements, preceded by the dissertation examination. Successful graduates are awarded the academic title "Philosophiae Doctor" (abbreviated as "PhD.").
Tuition fees for 2025/2026 academic year will be paid according to the Regulation, which will be approved for that academic year.
Prospects of graduates
The doctoral study programme in commercial and financial law is identical in content to the areas and scope of knowledge, skills and competences required for graduates of the study programme according to the National Qualification Framework SKK-8. The requirement for completing this study programme is the previous successful completion of a master's degree in the law study programme. The graduates master the scientific methods of basic and applied research in legal sciences, which serve as a basis for carrying out research and development and creating new scientific knowledge in the field of law. The graduates are focused on commercial and financial law. The graduates have a systematic, comprehensive and overall set of knowledge in the field of commercial and financial law in the following subfields - the status of commercial companies, commercial obligations, securities, public law regulation of business, bankruptcy law, financial law, tax law, economic law and related disciplines, including knowledge and understanding of the relationships between them, as well as to other parts of the field, primarily civil law. The graduates also have a deep knowledge of theories, sophisticated methods and procedures of science and research at a level corresponding to international criteria. The graduates can analyse, synthesize and compare legal institutes in the field of commercial and financial law with the aim of their more effective application in the legal order. They apply their own findings from their theoretical analysis and their comprehensive scientific research to solve law-related problems. Based on their outputs and findings, they can propose, verify and implement new scientific knowledge. They are able to identify shortcomings, propose their solution by means of interpretation or law-making methods and compare the current state of knowledge in the field of commercial and financial law with the legal systems of other countries or with the jurisprudential doctrine of other countries. The graduates can actively acquire new knowledge and information, critically analyse and re-evaluate them and use them in theory and practical applications for the development of the field of business and financial law, can apply and creatively improve and develop theories and research, development and innovation procedures in the field and create new. They can identify global scientific and innovative developments in the field and in related fields and use it in the direction and development of the field, with the integration of knowledge from different areas. The graduates have independent critical and analytical thinking, which they apply in changing social conditions. They present independently the results of research and development in the field of commercial and financial law before the professional community in the Slovak Republic and abroad. They can determine the focus of research and coordinate the team in the relevant scientific field and acquire the ability to work scientifically and pedagogically at the required methodological level in the field of law. The graduates can plan and initiate the solution of complex problems/projects, including the formulation of goals, means and methods in the field of development in the field, can assess and modify their own professional activity in a wider context, in relation to the long-term impact in the given field and from the point of view of social, ethical, environmental and other criteria, they are ready to formulate information about the outputs and conclusions of scientific, research and development work at the international level and to manage large-scale research tasks and teams.

Conditions of admission
Admission requirements for the 3rd level of study
The basic requirement for admission to full-time and part-time doctoral studies is the successful completion of a master's degree in law study programme.
Another admission requirement is the successful completion of the admission exam, in which the examination committee appointed by the Dean determines the applicant's readiness for the given doctoral study programme in the following categories (ranked by importance from the most important one):
• project related to the topic of the dissertation - applicants submit and present their own (author's) project on the topic of the dissertation (within the scope of 5 standard pages of the text) - the originality and content of the project, the presentation of the project and the applicant's answers and reactions to the committee's questions in relation to the project are assessed - in this category; applicants can receive a maximum of 50 points (of which a maximum of 20 points for the elaboration of the project – the originality and content of the project; a maximum of 20 points for the presentation of the project and a maximum of 10 points for the applicant's answers and reactions to the committee's questions in relation to the project);
• knowledge in the scope of a second-level higher education in a given field and the professional and scientific overview of the applicant in the chosen field - are assessed by an oral interview (especially answers to the committee's questions) - in this category, the applicant can get a maximum of 20 points;
• prerequisites for scientific activity - are assessed by the applicant's own publication and other scientific activity - in this category, the applicant can receive a maximum of 20 points;
• command of one of the languages: English, German, Russian, French or Spanish at least at level B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - the applicant will submit a certificate of command of a foreign language at the required level or the examination committee will check the language knowledge through an oral interview - in this category the applicant can get a maximum of 10 points.
The admission exam will take place orally. Applicants for doctoral studies must demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities from the field of law, as well as the content, methods and expected results of the dissertation. The examination committee determines the applicant's interest in the study programme, interest in science, and takes into account the study results of the master's degree when making the final decision. The result of the admission interview in front of the examination committee is taken into account in the admission to doctoral studies in both full-time and part-time study, based on the number of points obtained by the candidate. If applicants for full-time doctoral studies do not achieve at least 75 points out of 100 in the admission exam, they have not successfully passed the admission exam.
The admissions interview committee evaluates the result of the admission exam in a closed session. Based on the assessment of individual applicants and after taking into account their values of the weighted academic mean from the master's degree, they will determine the order of success. The Dean of the Faculty will decide whether or not to accept applicants, based on the opinion of the admissions interview committee, within 30 days from the date of the admission exam.
The number of admitted applicants is based on the approved planned number of admitted applicants for 2025/2026 academic year. The Dean of the Faculty of Law of MBU has the right, based on the current state of the number of admitted applicants, to decide not to open the study programme in a given academic year.
ADMISSION PROCEDURE - General information:
The admission procedure for each level of study begins with the receipt of an application to the Faculty. The Faculty does not confirm receipt of the application.
In the application, it is necessary to clearly indicate which form of study the applicant is interested in, whether in the admission to full-time or part-time study. The application for study is submitted separately for the full-time form of study and separately for the part-time form of study. In one "Application for higher education studies" form, only one form of study is indicated. In case of interest in both forms of study, it is necessary to submit two applications, i.e., separately for full-time and separately for part-time form of study and pay twice the admission fee.
The MBU Faculty of Law prefers submission of electronic applications - in that case it is not necessary to send the application in paper form.
Only if the applicant does not have the possibility to submit an electronic application, they can send the application in paper form to the address: Právnická fakulta UMB, Komenského 20, 974 01 Banská Bystrica (MBU Faculty of Law, Komenského 20, 974 01 Banská Bystrica) within the application deadline for the relevant degree –form of study.
If the application is submitted in paper form, the 3rd page of the application form must have the applicant's handwritten signature.
Certified copies of all documents required for the electronic version are attached to the paper application. If the application is submitted in paper form, it is necessary to stick a copy of the proof of payment of the admission fee to the 3rd page of the application (account statement, internet banking statement. The payment order is not a proof of payment, therefore it will not be accepted!).
The MBU Faculty of Law does not require a medical certificate of medical fitness for higher education studies; we accept an application without a medical certificate.
Part of the application for doctoral studies (3rd level) is:
a) structured curriculum vitae
b) officially certified photocopies of documents on the completion of a master's degree in the law study programme (university diploma, state examination certificate, supplement to the diploma, or language diplomas);
c) the means of study results for the master's study with an indication of the weighted study mean (a graduate of the master's degree from another law faculty is obliged to submit a statement of the study results for the master's degree with an indication of the weighted study mean as an attachment to the application);
d) a list of published and unpublished professional and scientific works (e.g. books, articles, manuals, etc.), possibly expert reviews of these works and other documents worthy of consideration, e.g. diplomas from ŠVOČ (students´) conferences, documents on professional courses completed, etc.;
e) the framework project related to the topic of the dissertation in the scope of about 5 standard pages, which must contain: objectives of the dissertation, methods of processing the dissertation, the state of development of the issue and the expected benefit of the dissertation. The candidate chooses the topic of the dissertation from the topics approved for the relevant academic year, which are published on the Faculty's website in the section "Applicants - Information for PhD candidates";
f) the proof of payment of the administrative fee for the admission procedure.
If applicants submit electronic applications for doctoral studies, they must submit the documents forming part of the application, but above all the framework project related to the topic of the dissertation and the list of published and unpublished professional and scientific works (including other documents worthy of consideration) in paper form to the Study Office of the MBU Faculty of Law so that these documents are physically present at the Faculty no later than 6 June 2025. Graduates of a master's degree from another law faculty are also required to submit a statement of study results for the master's degree with an indication of the weighted academic mean by the specified date.
Conditions for international students
Application deadline and the requirements for foreign students´ admission are identical with the ones applicable to the students from the Slovak Republic. Tuition fees are regulated by the Regulation on Tuition for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Study applicants who completed the previous level of education abroad are required to submit the proof of recognition of formal qualification document obtained outside the territory of the Slovak Republic under the Act no. 422/2015 Coll. on the Recognition of Documents of Education and on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications, as amended. The accepted applicant must submit the decision on recognition of formal qualification documents not later than on the day of enrolment for studies.
In all study programmes of the MBU Faculty of Law, applicants who have not passed the secondary school graduation exam in the Slovak language and are applying for a study programme conducted in the Slovak language must be fluent in the Slovak language at least at the B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The Faculty of Law exclusively accepts a certificate of command of the Slovak language as a foreign/second language at the required level (minimum B2), which is issued by language schools registered by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Slovak Republic in the Network of Schools and School Facilities of the Slovak Republic (registered state language schools and private language schools). Applicants must submit an officially certified copy of a document confirming knowledge of the Slovak language at the required level no later than on the day of enrolment for studies.

The result of the admission interview in front of the examination committee is taken into account in the admission to doctoral studies in both full-time and part-time study, based on the number of points obtained by the candidate. If applicants for full-time doctoral studies do not achieve at least 75 points out of 100 in the admission exam, they have not successfully passed the admission exam.
The admissions interview committee evaluates the result of the admission exam in a closed session. Based on the assessment of individual applicants and after taking into account their values of the weighted academic mean from the master's degree, they will determine the order of success. The Dean of the Faculty will decide whether or not to accept applicants, based on the opinion of the admissions interview committee, within 30 days from the date of the admission exam.
The number of admitted applicants is based on the approved planned number of admitted applicants for 2025/2026 academic year. The Dean of the Faculty of Law of MBU has the right, based on the current state of the number of admitted applicants, to decide not to open the study programme in a given academic year.

Form of entrance exam
The admission exam will take place orally. Applicants for doctoral studies must demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities from the field of law, as well as the content, methods and expected results of the dissertation. The examination committee determines the applicant's interest in the study programme, interest in science, and takes into account the study results of the master's degree when making the final decision.
