The student will understand the principles and chronology of the evolution of life on Earth with emphasis on the evolution of Central European nature in the postglacial, understand the historical context of range changes, patterns of biota distribution in the context of climatic and anthropic changes, and apply the knowledge gained to assess contemporary changes to the Earth, region, and locality. Based on key features, can classify and specify important microorganisms, algae, fungi, bryophytes, vascular plants, invertebrates and vertebrates. They can define their life requirements, indicator traits, adaptations to changed conditions and their relationship to habitat. Apply knowledge of theoretical population, community and ecosystem ecology to biodiversity conservation issues and biological principles of nature conservation. He/she is oriented in the priorities of nature and landscape conservation, has an overview of general, territorial and species nature conservation at the theoretical and practical level, understands the genetic approach to management and protection of populations. He/she is familiar with the principles of ecological research and monitoring, bioindications and biomonitoring. Understands the basic concepts, processes, principles and problems related to the different components of the environment (lithosphere, soil, water, air and biota). Understands monitoring and information systems related to these components. Knows the interrelationships between (i) biota, (ii) public and environmental health, and (iii) different forms of mechanical, physico-chemical and anthropic disturbances within each component of the environment. The acquired knowledge can also be understood in the legislative framework by mastering the basic legal terminology, institutional provision of law, competences, powers and decision-making processes of public administration bodies, the legislative process itself, as well as the basic sectoral - component legislation at the international level, the level of the European Union and the Slovak Republic.
