Biotechnology

The graduates of the PhD study programme in Biotechnology are professionals who find employment in various areas of social practice. They will acquire knowledge in biotechnology and related fields (mainly biological, chemical, genetic and their specialisations) underpinning the development of biotechnology, especially in the areas of white, green and red biotechnology. They are able to engage in research, development and innovation, particularly in industry, agriculture, health, environment, energy, as well as to apply their knowledge directly in production practice in these areas.
Graduates of the study programme:
 have an active command of the English language,
 are able to work in a team and forecast developments in their field,
 are able to work independently and creatively scientifically in various areas of biotechnology as well as in frontier disciplines,
 are proficient in scientific approaches and research methodology in their chosen application areas of biotechnology,
 are able to design, manage and objectively evaluate problem-oriented experiments, focused on serious problems of contemporary societal practice,
 they also perform activities in various other areas of societal practice, in quality assurance and management, in environmental monitoring, in pharmaceutical and clinical biochemistry, in laboratory medicine, in the food industry and elsewhere.
Graduates have basic management skills, can lead a research team, plan team tasks and have knowledge of relevant economic, legal and ethical aspects. On the basis of the knowledge acquired, they are also qualified to teach specialised biotechnology subjects at university.
Graduates of the study programme can seek employment in a wide range of workplaces with a biological and chemical focus in research teams, as well as in independent work with a research-technical focus (SAV, universities, departments of health, agriculture and forestry, food industry, environment, etc.), as well as directly in production practice. They are prepared to meet the requirements of specialised institutions requiring field work, especially in workplaces dedicated to modern biotechnology, as well as environmentally oriented workplaces, and they will also find employment in state and local government institutions. Graduates also have a wide range of applications in private companies and industrial enterprises with innovative-technological orientation in biotechnology, but also in related fields.

Conditions of admission

The basic condition for admission to doctoral studies is a university education of the 2nd degree (Section 56 (3) of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Higher Education and on Amendments and Additions to Certain Acts).
Graduates of domestic or foreign universities may apply for admission to the studies if they have completed a master's or engineering degree.



Additional information

The application form must include:
- university diploma officially certified (registry office/notary) in the same or related field and programme,
- state examination certificate officially certified (registry office/notary),
- brief curriculum vitae together with an inventory of published and unpublished works,
- outline project on the topic of the dissertation,
- proof of completed work experience (not compulsory),
- proof of payment of the admission procedure fee.
A candidate who is a graduate of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the UCM in Trnava shall provide uncertified photocopies of the diploma and the certificate of the state examination.
Candidates apply for the listed topics, which are published on the faculty's website.
In the course of admission to doctoral studies, an admission interview will take place in the form of an interview, where the applicant presents his/her motives, project on the topic of the dissertation and prerequisites for the study, as well as knowledge of a foreign language. The candidate becomes a PhD student after successfully completing the selection procedure and after enrolment in the PhD programme on the basis of the admission decree of the Dean of the Faculty.



Conditions for international students

Admission conditions for international students are the same as for students from the Slovak Republic.
