Theory and methodology of sociology
The field of study includes knowledge concerning the basic levels, subsystems and processes in society and its segments, as well as methodological approaches and methodological rules of sociological investigation of social reality. The study focuses on the acquisition of knowledge and skills relating to sociological theory, the history of sociology and the methods of sociological research, which are complemented by basic knowledge of auxiliary and related disciplines such as demography, statistics, psychology, economics, philosophy, political science, logic and the methodology of science. Supporting themes include: social micro- and macrostructures, social processes, the history of sociological thought: classical and contemporary sociological theories, methods and techniques of sociological research, and sectoral sociological disciplines according to the focus of the dissertation.
Prospects of graduates
The graduate in the context of solving specific social problems is able to: identify the corresponding specific area, indicate and clarify the already used or standardly used methods and methods of their solution, as well as to propose new ways of solution; adapt and apply these solutions in specific conditions of solving the problem. The graduate is able to independently formulate and analyze problems, propose possible solutions and lead projects focused on working with people, in public institutions and organizations, in the media sector, in the service sector and in non-profit organizations.

The selection procedure is based on the previous study results, the professional examination and the professional interview on the applied dissertation topic, taking into account the results of the previous education. Applications from graduates of the study programme or related study programmes will be accepted. The admissions committee decides on the acceptance of the application.

The Faculty of Arts of the University of Trnava in Trnava (hereinafter referred to as TU) plans to admit one PhD student in the academic year 2025/2026 for internal doctoral studies in each of the open fields of study, depending on the amount of allocated budget and the fulfilment of the basic and other conditions for admission to the study.
The appropriate type of application form must be used for the study.
The basic condition for admission to the doctoral studies (PhD. degree) is the completion of the second cycle of higher education.
The Faculty of Philosophy of TU reserves the right to make changes and updates in order to improve the quality of the admission procedure, in accordance with Section 57 (5) of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on higher education as amended by later regulations.
Applicants should submit a completed application form to the address of the Faculty's seat: Faculty of Arts, University of Trnava, Hornopotočná 23, 918 43 Trnava. Candidates who have completed lower degree studies before the school. 2024/2025, they will send an application form, a certificate and a diploma from the Master's degree. Candidates who will graduate from lower secondary school in 2025 will send their application form together with a current certificate of attendance. Applicants who are taking the entrance examination will present the officially certified documents (diploma and M.A. certificate) in person at the presentation on the day of the entrance examination.

The admission procedure for a candidate begins on the day of receipt of his/her written application. For this reason, an applicant who submits his/her application electronically is obliged to submit it in written form, duly documented (proof of payment of the admission fee, certified M.Sc. diploma,...).
Applicants who will be admitted on the basis of a selection procedure will send certified copies of their certificates within two days after successful completion of the state examination.
The faculty does not require confirmation of the applicant's medical condition. If it is necessary to take a disability into account in the admission examination process, the applicant must attach a certificate of disability and the recommended form of examination to the application form.
Applicants may also submit multiple applications to the College. For each study programme it is necessary to submit a new application and pay the fee of 40,- € again.
Applicants who have completed a lower degree abroad shall submit nostrified documents of education in accordance with the provisions of Decree No. 422/2015 Coll. A receipt for the payment of the admission fee (in the amount of € 40.-) must be affixed to the 3rd page of the application form. In case of non-attendance at the entrance examination, the fee is not refundable. The Admissions Committee decides on the points required for admission.
