Conservation of Heritage Materials and Objects

Conservation Science and Technology is internationally recognized as an interdisciplinary, cross sectional and integrating science about the preservation, conservation and protection of heritage. Its aim is to protect and preserve heritage objects and materials at the horizon far exceeding their natural life. Study program Conservation of Heritage Materials and Objects allows obtaining interdisciplinary knowledge, which serve to scientific analysis, authentication, understanding of value, pricing, distribution, preserving and making available heritage. It combines a deep knowledge of natural sciences and technical view on the problems of protection of heritage objects and coordinates them with social and ethical approaches. It supports creating bridges between the exact and human sciences, allowing reinforcing each other and cooperation.

The graduate is an engineer specialized to the protection of materials, objects, artefacts and cultural heritage. He/she knows the processes of aging, degradation and protection of traditional and modern materials in objects of cultural heritage. He/she knows the basic principles of conservation and restoration of monuments and materials, current and historical technologies of protection and stabilization. He/she can perform and interpret analysis aimed to determine the authenticity of artefacts, their state of damage, research and conservation of materials and objects of cultural heritage. He/she is able to suggest optimal procedures of preventive protection and conservation interventions, based on the knowledge of ongoing physical and chemical processes. He/she has the theoretical foundations of heritage management; he/she knows the vision and strategy of protection of the heritage. He/she masters the theoretical foundations of development of heritage protection technologies, establishing new substances and new methods, equipment, systems to improve safety and quality of heritage, increasing capacity and effectiveness of protection. He/she has knowledge in computer science, art history, ethics, protection of relics, marketing and communications in the interdisciplinary team, too.



Prospects of graduates

The graduate of study program Conservation of Heritage Materials and Objects can be employed as a technologist, chemist, applied scientist or consultant in conservation and restoration of: paper information carriers, recording means, colour layers, textiles, wood, metals and other inorganic and polymeric materials. He/she can lead teams of professionals, supervise and coordinate projects, formulate research problems, work in an interdisciplinary team and relevantly communicate with its members. He/she may continue in PhD. study in the continuing study program or related programs. He/she can self-reliantly educate, independently conduct business or be employed in the local and state/governmental administration.
