Microbiology and Immunology

A graduate of the Microbiology and Immunology study programme is qualified to exercise the profession of an expert in the field of microbiology and immunology. He/she is proficient in the scientific methods of research in experimental and clinical microbiology and immunology, which he/she implements creatively on various model objects (cell cultures and laboratory animals). Can use statistical and bioinformatics methods as well as other knowledge from related disciplines.

Explores the properties of microorganisms (morphological, cultural, metabolic, biochemical, molecular-biological, etc.) as well as at different levels of their interrelationships with the host (commensal, mutualist, facultative pathogen and pathogen), using progressive methodological approaches in order to gain new, previously unpublished knowledge. Also, individual components of the immune system in terms of morphology and functionality, as well as at different levels of their interactions with pathogens (bacteria, viruses or parasites), using progressive methodological approaches in order to gain new, previously unpublished knowledge. Acquires technical skills not only in routine laboratory procedures, but also in working with software-intensive instrumentation in bacteriology, mycology, virology and immunology laboratories. He/she is able to formulate scientific problems, conduct creative and independent research and independently present the results of his/her work in internationally accepted journals or present them at scientific events. The results of creative experimental work not only contribute to the development of science and scientific knowledge, but their appropriate scientific value enables their application in human and veterinary medicine, agriculture, pharmacology and the protection of the gene pools of animals and man himself.

Absolvent is characterized by independent, critical and analytical thinking. It takes into account social, scientific and ethical considerations when formulating research objectives and interpreting research results. The results of his/her own creative work contribute to the development of science, scientific knowledge and the application of acquired knowledge to practice. He/she presents the results of research and development independently to the professional community. Is able to determine the focus of research and coordinate a team in the relevant study programme. Can independently design, validate and implement new research and working practices based on their outputs and findings.



Prospects of graduates

A graduate of the study programme microbiology and immunology can apply as a microbiologist - expert in basic and applied research of microbiological focus in the Department of Health, Agriculture, Environment, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of the Interior or as an immunologist - expert in basic and applied research of immunological focus in the Department of Health, Agriculture and Environment.

The basic requirement is a 2nd level university degree in a relevant field of study.

Acceptance to study is conditional on successful completion of the admission procedure and knowledge of a foreign language.

Acceptance of an applicant to doctoral studies without an admission procedure is not possible!
