Free Fine Art

Doctoral studies take place in an external 4-year form. It consists of an individual study plan. It is completed by a dissertation examination and a dissertation defense (ArtD.).

Doctoral studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts are focused on the acquisition of knowledge based on the current state of artistic and scientific knowledge and, in particular, on the student's own contribution to it, which is the result of scientific research and independent creative activity in the field of science or technology or independent theoretical and creative activity in the field of art. Graduates of doctoral study programmes receive a third-level university degree. Doctoral studies are the highest level of higher education. Graduates of doctoral study programmes obtain a third-level university degree.

Doctoral studies consist of a study part, a research and artistic part and the doctoral student's teaching activity (only in the full-time form of study) or other professional activity. The study part of the doctoral studies consists mainly of lectures, seminars and individual study of literature necessary in terms of the focus of the doctoral thesis. The research and artistic part of the doctoral studies consists mainly of activities related to the elaboration of the doctoral thesis, consultations and artistic-publication and other activities. Full-time doctoral studies shall include the performance of teaching activities or other professional activities related to teaching activities to the extent of no more than four hours per week on average per academic year. The defence of the doctoral thesis shall be the end of the doctoral studies. It demonstrates the ability and readiness for independent research and scientific activity or independent theoretical and creative artistic activity.



Prospects of graduates

A graduate of the doctoral study programme in Liberal Fine Arts acquires the professional competence to exercise the profession of a visual artist at the level of Doctor of Fine Arts. He/she is prepared both creatively and technologically for independent practice in the field of visual arts within the framework of free art production. He/she has the prerequisites for artistic-pedagogical work at art colleges and is able to apply himself/herself on the international labour market.

Conditions of admission
  • The basic condition for admission to doctoral studies is a second-level higher education at the faculty or at another higher education institution (§ 56 (3) of the Act).
  • The applicant must document the above fact before the admission interview with certified copies of the documents on the education attained.
  • The Faculty of Fine Arts (hereinafter referred to as FVU) determines additional conditions for admission to the study programme of the third degree in order to ensure
    that applicants with the necessary abilities and prerequisites are admitted to the study. The conditions set and the method of verifying their fulfilment enable the selection of applicants
    who demonstrate the highest level of ability to study.

  • An applicant with specific needs shall, at his/her request, have the form of the entrance examination and the manner of its conduct determined, taking into account his/her specific needs, on the basis of an assessment of his/her specific needs (Section 100(9)(b)). The admission procedure shall be conducted by attendance. If, at the time of the admissions procedure, studies are being conducted by distance learning, the admission procedure may also be conducted by distance learning.
  • Due to the application of the same assessment criteria for all applicants to study at the Faculty of Physical Education, it is not possible to set an alternative date for the admission procedure. The admission procedure for an applicant for studies begins with the receipt of his/her written application for studies at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sciences.
  • The Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Culture shall announce the topics of the dissertations for which applications for doctoral studies may be submitted at least two months before the deadline for the submission of applications for doctoral studies. For each announced topic, the name of the study programme, the name of the supervisor, the form of study (full-time, part-time), the deadline for the submission of applications and the date of the admission procedure shall be indicated.

A candidate for studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica applies for studies by completing the electronic application form and sending it to the faculty by the deadline.

The applicant: fills in the electronic application form, confirms the electronic application form, prints the electronic application form, sends the signed application form with the necessary attachments by post to the faculty.

  • In the application form for doctoral studies, the applicant shall indicate:
    a/ the selected study programme and the selected dissertation topic,
    b/ the selected form of doctoral studies (full-time/external)

General information on the admission exam
  • The dean of the faculty shall announce at least two months before the deadline for submission of applications for doctoral studies the topics of dissertations that may be applied for in the admission procedure.
  • Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the format of the entrance examinations will be announced depending on the arrangements in place at the time of the entrance examinations.



Form of entrance exam

Oral interview:

  • Evaluation of the applicant's portfolio, which must be submitted in print and electronic form and must include the applicant's most significant art works, a short Curriculum Vitae, and a list of artistic and publishing activities (exhibitions, workshops, symposia, published texts...);
  • Evaluation of the applicant's dissertation project in written form, which must be submitted in Slovak (Czech) and English (or German or Spanish), in the scope of max. 3 NS/5400 characters, including spaces and punctuation, in which the basic framework of doctoral research at the vision stage is defined, where he/she formulates the conceptual intent of his/her original artistic research, in the context of the dissertation topic written by the supervisor, the philosophical background of the topic under study, the methods and the aim of the research;
  • Discussion between the members of the committee and the candidate for doctoral studies in the form of a discussion, in which he or she orally defends his or her dissertation project, demonstrates his or her abilities and prerequisites for independent research and artistic activity, and knowledge of the theory and history of art with an emphasis on the given topic.
