Composition

The core topics of the Bachelor's degree programme in Composition are related to the field of music composition. During the course of study, the graduate will acquire the ability to create a musical work of art, gaining a wide range of creative and practical experience in the field of musical art. Gain the theoretical knowledge and skills to understand the essential facts, concepts, and principles that are closely related to the art of music. Apply this knowledge independently in the analysis and creation of musical works in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of the context of his/her specialisation.



Prospects of graduates

The graduate of the bachelor's degree study programme Composition acquires the competence to exercise the profession of a music composer at the bachelor's degree level, is able to work independently in the field of music creation, has all the prerequisites to maintain contact with the development of musical art, to take and present positions in the field of musical culture and to continue his/her own professional development.
For a full university qualification, it is necessary to obtain a second higher education degree and to undergo additional pedagogical training; if he/she has completed an artistic secondary conservatory music education, he/she can also be employed as a teacher at a ZUŠ.

Conditions of admission

A student may enter the bachelor's study after successful completion of secondary education, which ends with the matriculation examination and after successfully passed entrance examinations.
The purpose of the entrance examination is to examine the level of knowledge, talent, abilities and skills of the applicant in terms of the specific requirements that arise for the applicant from the chosen study programme. The entrance examination consists of a talent test and a written examination. The talent test is conducted in a manner appropriate to the nature of the programme of study which the student wishes to study.
Study programme: Composition

1/ A written examination, testing the candidate's knowledge and compositional skills in harmony and counterpoint within the scope of the curricular material of the senior year of the conservatory.

2/ Practical examination in aural analysis.

3/ Practical examination in piano playing or in playing another musical instrument within the scope of the syllabus of the third year of the conservatory in the relevant instrumental field.

4/ Oral examination in general music, harmony, counterpoint, musical forms, musical instruments and music history within the scope of the teaching material of the final year of the conservatory.

5/ Examination in composition - submission of scores of at least three compositions of the composer's own compositions in pure text, or a sound recording of them, and their professional verbal presentation. Candidates may also supplement their portfolio with additional materials, such as written works on composition theory, or documentation of participation in composition competitions or performances of compositions in concerts.

6/ A final interview regarding the candidate's orientation in contemporary music culture and foreign language

A candidate applies to study by completing the online application form and then submitting it to the faculty by the specified deadline.

To complete the online application form, the applicant must log on to https://e-prihlaska.aku.sk, where the applicant:

  • completes the online application form
  • confirm the online application
  • print the online application form

Conditions for international students

For international applicants, the same conditions for online application as above apply. The documents of the completed studies must be translated into Slovak language and certified.

Foreigners applying to study in an accredited study programme are recommended to acquire such knowledge of the Slovak language that fluent communication is possible during their studies at the faculty. It is also possible to use the Czech language while studying at the faculty.

Proof of completion of language training at ÚJOP UK Bratislava or similar professional language institution (except for foreign Slovaks and applicants from the Czech Republic) must be submitted.

General information on the admission exam

In the written test or oral interview, the candidate is scored between 0 and 7 points. The scores obtained for the talent, written or oral test shall be added together. A candidate may obtain a maximum of 32 points corresponding to an A grade and a minimum of 18 points corresponding to an E grade. If the candidate obtains 17 points or less (FX), he/she fails.

The entrance examination requirements for the Bachelor's degree programme are published on the Faculty's website https://fmu.aku.sk in the Admissions section.

If for serious reasons a candidate is unable to attend the entrance examination, he/she is obliged to notify the Faculty's Study Department (alena.strmenova@aku.sk) no later than on the day of the admission procedure and may request an alternative date in writing.

Evaluation scale for the entrance examination number of points obtained:

32 - 30 is equivalent to A/1 - Pass

29 - 27 corresponds to B/1.5 - pass

26 - 24 corresponds to C/2 - pass

23 - 21 corresponds to D/2,5 - pass

20 - 18 correspond to E/3 - pass

17 and below corresponds to Fx - fail

The Faculty does not require a medical certificate of medical fitness for undergraduate study. Attachments to the printed online application: certified photocopy of the school leaving certificate and supplement, structured curriculum vitae. Do not attach annual report cards. Applicants applying before graduation, which will be in 2023, should attach only a structured CV and send evidence of having passed the graduation examination by post when it is issued. In case of incomplete and missing information, the application will not be registered.
