Child Development and Family Studies (full-time study)

The curriculum responds to the changes in postmodern society and the development of knowledge. In the context of the field of social work, it specializes in work with children, youth and family. The programme is based on the demands of the labour market and seeks to respond to them in innovative and creative ways.

Teaching is concentrated on the acquisition of knowledge, experience and skills in the field of bio-psycho-social development of the child and focuses on methods of working with the family.

The program is characterized by being innovative in its preference for modern methods of working with the child and his/her family, flexible in the educators' approach to the students, creative in the opportunities for their self-development and self-realization, and distinctly multi-disciplinary in nature. Its studies provide in particular : social-psychological competences for work with the family and the child, professional applicable knowledge in psychology, pedagogy, law, sociology, pediatrics, economics and management; to acquire and develop practical skills in specific communication, in rehabilitation, counselling and therapeutic techniques, in advocacy, mediation and management.



Prospects of graduates

The application of the graduate of the Child Development and Family Studies program is focused on social work with the child and his/her family. Upon graduation, the graduate will have knowledge of the bio-psycho-social developmental characteristics of the child, which, together with practiced communication skills, can be competently applied in working with children with emotional and behavioral disorders and children with disabilities. In the selection and implementation of effective procedures in working with the family and the child, she draws on the knowledge base of philosophical and social theoretical foundations of work with the family, legislative and economic realities of Slovakia. Attention is paid to the processes of working with the family, with an emphasis on the creation and implementation of methodologies for effective intervention.
The graduate of the bachelor's degree is able to analyze the problems of a client or a group of clients, or a community and to propose forms and methods of social work, leading to an increase in the quality of their lives. He/she possesses basic relevant knowledge in the field of law, economics, psychology, sociology, demography and others. He/she has knowledge of the social policy of the state and its development trends, is able to coordinate his/her work with other professionals and effectively create a network of assistance to individual and group clients. He/she is prepared to work in social service institutions, social protection of children and adult guardianship institutions. He mostly works directly with the target client group and his efforts are to improve their quality of life, especially through the use of his social-psychological and human resource development skills, as well as working with his environment. In accordance with Act No. 219/2014 Coll. on Social Work, the graduate of the Bachelor's degree programme is employed as a social worker's assistant, who carries out his/her professional activity in the intent of Act No. 448/2008 on Social Services as amended and Act No. 305/2005 on social protection of children and social guardianship, as amended, in accordance with the Statistical Classification of Occupations SK ISCO-08 in the position of "assistant social worker" in the following positions:

Conditions of admission

The basic condition for admission to the three-year bachelor's study programme in the full-time (and full-time combined) form of study (completed by obtaining the degree "Bc") is the acquisition of a complete secondary education or a complete secondary vocational education. A selection procedure is another admission requirement to ensure that applicants with the necessary skills and aptitudes are admitted to the course.



Additional information

Applicants graduating in the school year 2022/2023 and earlier will send all necessary attachments with their application.
Applicants graduating in the school year 2023/2024 will submit all necessary attachments except for the 4th grade report card and the high school diploma, which they will submit by the deadline set by the faculty and which will be communicated to the applicant in writing in a timely manner.

Conditions for international students

The conditions of admission of foreigners, foreign students or students who have completed their secondary school studies abroad are the same as the conditions of admission of students who have completed their secondary school studies in the Slovak Republic and are citizens of the Slovak Republic.

Proof of equivalence of education shall be provided by the applicant no later than on the day of enrolment.

The selection procedure consists of:
1. An assessment of the results achieved during secondary school studies. The overall average from secondary school from 3.6 to 1.0 is expressed linearly in the following values: average 1.0.... 100 points to 3.6 ... 0 points;
2. From the Motivation Letter, in which the applicant indicates both his/her motivation to study and the skills he/she has to master the study. Max. The maximum number of points is 10.
3. From the documented specific activities , such as participation in high school scientific activities, volunteering, participation in various artistic, sports competitions, participation in projects, etc. For each documented activity, the applicant may receive 2 points..
4. From the documented medical fitness to study certified by a doctor. In connection with medical fitness it is necessary to emphasize the fact that during the study students, in addition to theoretical lectures, will also undergo practice, where they will work with a risky client in risky situations.

The applicants who demonstrate the highest level of fitness for study, i.e.
An applicant who has completed secondary school studies abroad shall submit nostrified documents of education in accordance with Act No. 422/2015 Coll. on the Recognition of Documents of Education and on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications and on the Amendment and Supplementation of Certain Acts.
1. Those applicants who have not passed the matriculation examination in Slovak or Czech language must also pass a test in Slovak language - level B1, which will be prepared by the faculty, as part of the admission procedure. Only applicants who achieve at least 60% in the Slovak language test may be included in the selection procedure under points 1 to 3.
