Imunology
The graduate student has extensive expertise in several areas of the curriculum or discipline, which he or she uses as a basis for conducting research and development in immunology. He or she focuses on acquiring the latest theoretical knowledge based on the current state of scientific knowledge in the various areas of immunology.
The core knowledge carriers of the graduate are the profile courses in general immunology, clinical immunology, molecular biology, cytochemical and immunochemical methods and mucosal immune system, which have the knowledge achieved as learning outcomes described in the information sheets. Additional knowledge is achieved by completing compulsory elective courses in special microbiology, animal infectious diseases, pathological physiology, statistical evaluation of biological experiments and pathological reactions of the immune system.
It builds on the knowledge acquired by second degree studies at veterinary and medical faculties (universities), as well as at pharmaceutical, natural sciences and other faculties of medicine and natural sciences. On this basis, the principles of education in level 3 are based for the acquisition of knowledge in theoretical, applied and clinical immunology. Special attention is paid to the study of immune response at the molecular level in in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo conditions (animal models) with a focus on gene expression (qRT-PCR, RNA-seq), as well as detection of molecules - CD markers, antibodies, cytokines (by flow cytometry, immunoenzymatic or immunofluorescence methods) involved in the generation and regulation of the immune response. It focuses on acquiring the latest theoretical and practical knowledge. The results of creative experimental work contribute not only to the development of the field itself, but also to the development of scientific knowledge in general.
A graduate of the immunology study programme is qualified to exercise the profession of an expert in the field of immunology. He/she is proficient in the scientific methods of research in experimental and clinical immunology, which he/she implements creatively on various model objects (cell cultures and laboratory animals). He is able to use statistical and bioinformatic methods as well as other knowledge from related disciplines.
He studies individual components of the immune system in terms of morphology and functionality, as well as at different levels of their interactions with pathogens (bacteria, viruses or parasites) using progressive methodological approaches in order to gain new, previously unpublished knowledge. He is technically proficient not only in routine laboratory procedures but also in working with the software-intensive instrumentation of the immunology laboratory. He/she can formulate scientific problems, conduct creative and independent research and independently present the results of his/her work in internationally accepted journals or present them at scientific events. The results of creative experimental work not only contribute to the development of science and scientific knowledge, but their appropriate scientific value enables their application in human and veterinary medicine and pharmacology.
Prospects of graduates
A graduate of the immunology study programme can apply as an immunologist - an expert in basic and applied immunological research in the health, agriculture and environment sectors.
